Career Pathways: Mayvis Oddoye
Mayvis’ Journey of Dedication and Leadership in Nursing
Early Training and Foundation My nursing journey began in 1983 at West Park Hospital in Epsom, where I enrolled as a student nurse under the Mid-Surrey Health Authority. This was a time of learning and growth, as I was exposed to various key areas that would shape my future career. These areas included Older People Services, Acute Inpatient Services, Community Nursing, Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation, and Children and Young People Services (CAMHS). Each of these rotations provided me with a diverse and comprehensive understanding of nursing, laying a solid foundation for my career. In 1986, I proudly qualified as a Registered Nurse , ready to embark on what would become a deeply fulfilling career. Early Career After qualifying, I began my career as a Staff Nurse on a Psychogeriatric ward, now known as Older People’s Mental Health Services. This experience offered insights into the challenges faced by older adults with mental health issues. Hoping to broaden my expertise, I later moved to Acute Inpatient Services at the Department of Psychiatry at Epsom General Hospital. The environment of acute care helped my clinical skills and deepened my understanding of psychiatric nursing. My desire to make a more direct impact on patients' lives led me into Community Psychiatric Nursing (CPN) as a Sister, where I was able to work closely with individuals in their communities, offering personalised care and support.
Advancement and Specialisation In 1994, I took a significant step forward in my career by pursuing a Master’s degree at the United Medical and Dental School (Guys and St Thomas Hospital). This academic pursuit marked the beginning of a period of specialization and leadership within the nursing profession. Over the next decade, I held a variety of roles that allowed me to influence practice and policy across different settings. These roles included Clinical Nurse Specialist, Senior Nurse, Practice Development Nurse, and Service Manager for Acute Inpatient Services, Rehabilitation Unit, Close Supervision Unit, and CAMHS. My leadership journey continued as I took on the role of Head of Practice Development trust- wide, and eventually became Head of Nursing. In this capacity, I also took on the critical responsibility of Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children, a role that deepened my commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in our society.
