Career Pathways: Mayvis Oddoye

Mayvis’ Journey of Dedication and Leadership in Nursing

Early Training and Foundation My nursing journey began in 1983 at West Park Hospital in Epsom, where I enrolled as a student nurse under the Mid-Surrey Health Authority. This was a time of learning and growth, as I was exposed to various key areas that would shape my future career. These areas included Older People Services, Acute Inpatient Services, Community Nursing, Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation, and Children and Young People Services (CAMHS). Each of these rotations provided me with a diverse and comprehensive understanding of nursing, laying a solid foundation for my career. In 1986, I proudly qualified as a Registered Nurse , ready to embark on what would become a deeply fulfilling career. Early Career After qualifying, I began my career as a Staff Nurse on a Psychogeriatric ward, now known as Older People’s Mental Health Services. This experience offered insights into the challenges faced by older adults with mental health issues. Hoping to broaden my expertise, I later moved to Acute Inpatient Services at the Department of Psychiatry at Epsom General Hospital. The environment of acute care helped my clinical skills and deepened my understanding of psychiatric nursing. My desire to make a more direct impact on patients' lives led me into Community Psychiatric Nursing (CPN) as a Sister, where I was able to work closely with individuals in their communities, offering personalised care and support.

Advancement and Specialisation In 1994, I took a significant step forward in my career by pursuing a Master’s degree at the United Medical and Dental School (Guys and St Thomas Hospital). This academic pursuit marked the beginning of a period of specialization and leadership within the nursing profession. Over the next decade, I held a variety of roles that allowed me to influence practice and policy across different settings. These roles included Clinical Nurse Specialist, Senior Nurse, Practice Development Nurse, and Service Manager for Acute Inpatient Services, Rehabilitation Unit, Close Supervision Unit, and CAMHS. My leadership journey continued as I took on the role of Head of Practice Development trust- wide, and eventually became Head of Nursing. In this capacity, I also took on the critical responsibility of Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children, a role that deepened my commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in our society.

Consultant Nurse for Safeguarding Children

Academic Achievement and Research My passion for nursing and commitment to advancing the profession led me to pursue a PhD at Surrey University, with a focus on Clinical Risk Assessment and Management. This research was not just an academic exercise; it had a real-world impact as I played a pivotal role in developing the Trust’s Clinical Risk Assessment and Management Policy, as well as training programs to implement these practices. My work was recognised with a Florence Nightingale Travel Scholarship, which allowed me to collaborate with leading researchers in the United States. I had the honour of presenting my findings at international conferences, including the International Council of Nurses Conference in Geneva and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association Conference in the United States. This experience broadened my perspective and connected me with a global network of nursing professionals. Consultancy and Safeguarding Focus In 2009, I embraced a new challenge by taking on the role of Consultant Nurse for Safeguarding Children full-time. This role was later expanded to include safeguarding for both children and adults, reflecting the importance of protecting vulnerable populations across all age groups. My work in safeguarding was further enriched by a second Florence Nightingale Travel Scholarship (2014- 2015), sponsored by the Chief Nursing Officer (England). This scholarship facilitated research in Grenada and Ghana, where I explored the impact of perceived cultural behaviours and attitudes on safeguarding practices. The findings from this research have been instrumental in promoting cultural competence and awareness, both within the Trust and the broader nursing community. As a Florence Nightingale Scholar, I have continued to advocate for cultural sensitivity and understanding in safeguarding practices, ensuring that all individuals receive the protection and care they deserve.

Dedication, Passion, Leadership, & Innovation Throughout my career, I have been driven by a steadfast dedication to providing high-quality care in every setting I have worked in. My passion for nursing has fuelled my continuous professional development and my commitment to contributing meaningfully to the profession. I have had the privilege of holding leadership positions that allowed me to influence practice development and safeguarding on a broad scale. My involvement in research and policy development, particularly in risk management and cultural competence, has been a source of pride and fulfilment. My career is a testament to the impact that a committed nurse can have on both the profession and the community. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have had to learn, lead, and make a difference in the lives of those I have cared for and worked with. As I continue on this journey, I remain passionate about nursing and dedicated to advancing the profession for future generations.

Venous Thrombo-Embolism (VTE) Training

This training is open to our registered colleagues (Nurses, Nursing associates, AHPs) and students that may have the responsibility of completing screenings.

BACKGROUND

The 2018 NICE VTE Guidelines on Hospital Acquired Thrombosis (NG89) recommended that acute psychiatric in-patients should have VTE risk assessment and appropriate thromboprophylaxis. Our Trust has published a Venous Thromboembolism Assessment and Prevention Policy which sets out the details for venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment in SABP inpatients, and the measures to be put in place to reduce the risk. We are therefore looking to roll out training and be assured that our registered frontline workers feel confident in completing a VTE assessment within 24 hours of admission in compliance with our Trust Policy.
