Focus on… Mette Laszkiewicz Director of Education

Mette has overall responsibility for Education and Training at SaBP. This includes Apprenticeships, Clinical Education, Statutory and Mandatory training, Leadership and Management development, and all associated funding. Mette has worked in the NHS since 1992, both in learning disability settings as well as mental health settings. She qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1996 and has worked in a variety of in-patient settings.

Quick Fire Questions to Mette

Favourite place in the world? Home, especially when I have all 3 kids, husband and dog there. What was your first job? Other than a paper-round, babysitting and supermarket shelf-filler, I worked in a large nursing home, washing up after dinner and serving coffee and tea in the evening. What is the coolest thing you’ve ever done? That is very subjective, and I am quite boring…. but dependant on mood; I have ridden a motorbike around Silverstone. In 2019 I ran the Paris half marathon with my oldest daughter and her Great Aunt, and I have walked the 4 highest Peaks in the UK and Ireland. What is one of your biggest achievements? Academic study and writing in English as it is my second language. If I have just visited Denmark, it becomes especially challenging – lol! If you could give any piece of advice, what would it be? Don’t worry about things outside your control but concentrate on doing your best on what you have control of.

‘The best thing about my job is the variety of people I connect with and the team’

Mette has always taken a keen interest in education of staff and noticed in her early management career that staff with a good solid foundation of knowledge provided better care for users of the services. Keeping her hand in with nursing, Mette is a Peer Vaccinator for the SaBP flu campaign and is also a trained Executive Performance Coach, providing coaching via the National Leadership Academy Coaching network. She is an advocate for introducing new roles in healthcare, especially nursing and was part of the design and implementation of the Nursing Associate role and led the implementation across Thames Valley when the role first was launched in the NHS.
